A Joyful Day on the Lake Ends in Catastrophe
A routine day of celebration turned into an unimaginable tragedy over the weekend, when a powerful thunderstorm capsized a boat carrying ten people on Lake Tahoe’s southwest edge. Among the eight victims confirmed dead were Josh Pickles, a 37-year-old DoorDash executive, his parents Terry Pickles (73) and Paula Bozinovich (71), and his uncle Peter Bayes (72) — all gathered to celebrate Bozinovich’s birthday.
According to authorities, the group’s 8-metre gold Chris-Craft vessel was caught off guard by a rapidly intensifying storm that brought 30-knot winds and waves as high as 8 feet, overwhelming the boat and those aboard.
“No words can express the pain and anguish we feel,” said Josh’s wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, who stayed home caring for the couple’s seven-month-old daughter.
A Celebration Cut Short by Nature’s Fury
The tragedy unfolded on Saturday, June 21, when what should have been a relaxing family outing became one of the deadliest boating incidents on Lake Tahoe in recent memory. Ten people were aboard the boat at the time, including Pickles’ extended family and friends from California and New York.
While two survivors were rescued shortly after the boat capsized, the other eight were either pulled from the lake or later confirmed deceased. The identities of the survivors and their conditions remain undisclosed.
“The waves were so big that the water came onboard and started to fill the boat up and stalled the engine,” said family spokesperson Sam Singer.
The boat, which Pickles had purchased just a year prior, had only been used twice before. The group had gathered to celebrate Bozinovich’s birthday — an event that quickly turned into an irreversible nightmare.
Remembering the Victims
In addition to the Pickles family, other victims included:
-
Timothy O’Leary (71) of Auburn, California
-
Theresa Giullari (66) and James Guck (69) of Honeoye, New York
-
Stephen Lindsay (63) of Springwater, New York
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, in a statement issued Tuesday, extended “deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those affected by this tragic event.”
A Legacy of Leadership and Love
Josh Pickles was a well-respected leader at DoorDash, where he had worked for nearly seven years. In a statement, CFO Ravi Inukonda described him as “an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
“Josh loved his team… We are heartbroken,” Inukonda added.
His wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, works at Airbnb, and the couple split their time between the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe. They had recently married in 2023 and welcomed their daughter later that year.
A Community in Mourning
The incident has rocked not only the local Lake Tahoe community but also the broader tech world. Colleagues and neighbors alike are mourning a family known for their warmth, ambition, and kindness.
While Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for boating and recreation, incidents of this magnitude are rare. Lieutenant Scott Crivelli of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department said that while the lake sees an average of six deaths each summer, 2021 set a grim record with 15 fatalities. Still, multi-fatality boating accidents remain uncommon.
Deadly Weather, Rare Circumstances
U.S. Coast Guard officials said conditions changed rapidly, turning a picturesque lake scene into chaos within minutes. The fierce storm made it difficult for even experienced boaters to navigate, and waves quickly filled the boat, disabling the engine.
Rescue operations were launched Saturday evening and resumed Sunday morning. After extensive searching, the Coast Guard suspended the search, concluding one of the most intense response operations in recent years.
Looking Ahead: Questions and Safety Measures
This tragedy raises important questions about boating safety, weather awareness, and emergency preparedness. While weather warnings were issued in the region, the rapid intensification of the storm highlights the risks of being on open water in unpredictable conditions.
Local authorities are now expected to review storm response protocols and safety education, especially for private boat owners on major recreational lakes.
As investigations continue, the families affected are left to pick up the pieces. What was meant to be a joyful lakeside celebration turned into a heartbreaking reminder of nature’s unpredictability.
Josh Pickles’ story is not just one of loss, but also of legacy. As a leader in tech, a loving father and husband, and a devoted son, his life touched many — and his memory, along with those lost with him, will live on in the hearts of their communities.
“Our hearts go out to those who tragically lost their lives… and the survivors of this unexpected and deadly storm,” said Sugar-Carlsgaard.
