A preliminary report released today by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) indicates that fuel control switches for both engines were moved to “cutoff” — effectively shutting them down — seconds before the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed, killing 260 people.

Flight 171 departed from Ahmedabad on June 12, bound for London. After climbing normally and reaching its top recorded airspeed, the aircraft’s twin GE GEnx-1B engines abruptly lost power. The AAIB’s 15-page preliminary report revealed that both fuel switches moved from “RUN” to “CUTOFF” in rapid succession — just one second apart.
According to the cockpit voice recorder, one pilot immediately questioned the action. But the co-pilot denied cutting fuel to the engines. Within seconds, the aircraft lost altitude.
The pilots managed to momentarily switch the fuel controls back to “RUN” and attempted to recover engine power. A desperate “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY” call was transmitted, but it was already too late.

Miraculously, a single British citizen walked away from the wreckage. He has since been discharged from a Gujarat hospital after what doctors called “non-life-threatening injuries.”

Investigators Zero In on Fuel Switch System
Past FAA Warnings Resurface — But No Mandates Enforced
The AAIB noted that back in 2018, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had issued an information bulletin highlighting a potential disengagement risk in the locking feature of Boeing 787’s fuel control switches. However, this was deemed “advisory” — not mandatory — and Air India, in line with global airline practice, did not carry out recommended inspections.
“Air India did not perform inspections as the FAA’s advisory was non-compulsory,” the report confirmed.
Critically, the report added that no technical faults have been identified yet in either the aircraft or the engines. Boeing and GE, the aircraft and engine manufacturers respectively, were found to be compliant with all service bulletins and airworthiness directives.
Boeing Silent, Global Agencies Watching Closely
International Scrutiny as ICAO, FAA, and UK Join Probe
The crash has drawn international attention. The UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requires a preliminary report within 30 days of such an accident. US and UK air accident investigators have joined India’s AAIB in the effort.
Boeing has not yet responded to requests for comment. The FAA has declined to speak while the investigation is ongoing, but internal sources told The Air Current earlier this week that the probe is “narrowing its focus” to cockpit actions surrounding the fuel switch transitions.
Still, officials warned that investigations of this nature often evolve. “This could take months — if not longer,” the report noted.
